The service upgrade is the job that separates electricians who make money from electricians who stay busy. It is a full day of work, it needs a permit and a utility coordination, and there are four or five ways for the schedule to slip that have nothing to do with your skill.

Here is the actual arithmetic at a $135 loaded rate, with real labor hours and real material, in a Philadelphia metro market. Change the rate and the structure still holds.

Three jobs, one name

Customers say "service upgrade" and mean three different things that price differently.

100A to 200A. The real upgrade. New panel, new service entrance conductors, new meter socket, new grounding and bonding. Eight hours.

150A to 200A. Often the existing service entrance and mast can stay. Six hours, because you are changing the panel and the meter, not the whole path.

Federal Pacific or Zinsco replacement. Same eight hours as a 100A upgrade, and worth naming separately because the sales conversation is completely different. Nobody wants to spend money on a panel that works. They will spend money on a panel that has a documented history of breakers failing to trip.

Where the hours actually go

Two of those eight hours are not electrical work. Permit coordination and the inspection visit are administrative time that a lot of shops leave out of the estimate entirely, then wonder why an eight hour job took ten and the ticket did not move.

Building the price

Every number here comes from the same calculation:

(billable hours × loaded labor rate × overhead factor) + (material cost × markup)

At $135 with a 1.35 overhead multiplier and a 20% target margin, the labor factor works out to about 1.69. Material carries 30%.

Eight hours: 8 × $135 × 1.69 = $1,824. Material: $485 × 1.30 = $631. Rounded, that is a $2,450 flat rate. Your cost on the job is $1,710, leaving $740 of gross profit at 30%.

Thirty percent margin is healthy. Compare it to a full HVAC changeout at 15% and the reason is obvious: on a service upgrade the labor is the majority of the ticket. Only $485 of a $2,450 job is material. You are selling your work, not somebody else's equipment.

The AFCI line deserves attention. A jurisdiction that requires AFCI protection on the circuits you are relanding turns a panel swap into a panel swap plus twelve breakers. That is not an upsell, it is code, and it needs to be in the quote before you write the number down. Finding it at inspection means eating it.

A 50% jump in labor rate moves the service upgrade 35%. That is a labor-heavy job responding the way a labor-heavy job should. If you are underpriced across the board, this is one of the jobs your rate increase actually fixes.

Where this job loses money

The second inspection. One inspection is in the eight hours. A correction and a re-inspect is another trip, another wait, and a customer without power in between. This is the single most common way a service upgrade goes over.

The utility's schedule. You do not control the disconnect and reconnect. A crew that shows up at 3pm instead of 8am turns a one-day job into two. Price the coordination time and set the customer's expectation before you start, not while they are standing in a dark kitchen.

What is behind the panel. Existing branch circuits that are too short to reland, a cracked service mast, rotted sheathing where the meter sits, aluminum branch wiring you did not know about. None of it is in the eight hours and all of it is common in a house that still has 100A service.

AFCI requirements discovered at inspection. Twelve breakers at $280 each is $3,360 of work. If the quote said $2,450 and the inspector says AFCI, that conversation happens after the customer already agreed to a number.

Permit fees quoted as included. They vary by jurisdiction and they are not your money. Pass them through as a line item and say so.

Selling the FPE panel on price. A Federal Pacific swap and a 100A upgrade are the same eight hours and the same $2,450. The difference is that one customer wants more power and the other one needs a hazard removed. Quoting the second one like the first leaves the value on the table.

The bottom line

A residential service upgrade is eight billable hours and roughly $485 of material, which prices at $2,450 to $3,800 depending on tier at a $135 rate. It carries about 30% gross margin, which is double what an HVAC changeout returns, because the work is mostly yours rather than a manufacturer's.

The money on this job is not in the panel. It is in charging for the coordination time, catching the AFCI requirement before the inspector does, and quoting the grounding, bonding and surge protection as the separate work they actually are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $7,460 too high for a service upgrade?
Not in a Philadelphia metro market with current 2026 material costs and a fully-code-compliant install. In lower-cost markets the same scope runs $5,500 to $6,500. In coastal California or NYC metro it can run $9,000 or more. The number that's "too high" is the one that makes you lose every bid you take. Track your close rate honestly and you'll know.

What if my materials cost more than $2,000 on this job?
Adjust your book. Material costs are an input, not a fixed assumption. If you're consistently spending $2,300 on materials for the same job, your book should reflect that, and every quote you generate should automatically adjust upward.

How do I know if my market is "high-cost" or "low-cost"?
The single best signal is wages for journeyman electricians in your area. If your union local pays $55 to $75 an hour, your effective billable rate as a contractor needs to support that. If it pays $30 to $40, your effective rate is lower and your prices follow. Look up the Bureau of Labor Statistics data for your metro if you want a hard number.

Should I include the surge protector by default?
That depends on your market. In jurisdictions where the 2023 NEC or 2026 NEC has been adopted, surge protection is required for new services. In older code jurisdictions, it's an upsell. Either way, present it on the estimate so the customer can decide.

What about the generator interlock?
Always price it as a separate line item. Customers often want one but get sticker-shocked into deferring. Quoting it separately lets them book the service upgrade now and add the interlock later without renegotiating the whole job.
